- Do Not Miss the Opportunity to Meet Your Members of Congress - Early Registration for the Joint Surgical Advocacy Conference Ends February 20!
The AANS and CNS are cosponsoring, along with the American College of Surgeons and 12 other surgical societies, the second annual Joint Surgical Advocacy Conference (JSAC). This three-day conference will be held on March 22-24, 2009 in Washington, DC. With healthcare issues dominating the political agenda this year, it is critical that neurosurgeons participate in the process to shape legislation that will affect your practice and your patients’ access to timely neurosurgical care.

- Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine Research Generates Coverage in More than 150 Media Outlets
The AANS distributed a press release to lay media on a Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine article in late January. This is the second time that the AANS has publicized a JNS clinical article. The release has generated major media coverage in more than 150 media outlets including HealthDay, MSN, Yahoo!News, Discovery Health, Forbes, Business Week, U.S. News & World Report, SpineUniverse, Medscape, and Occupational Health & Safety, reaching a potential audience of 172 million.

- HealthDay Concussion Article Yields Major AANS Media Coverage
HealthDay.com, a leading Web-based consumer health media outlet published an article on concussions, discussing a Canadian research study published in Brain. In the article, there is a link to the AANS patient Web topic on concussion.
Click here to read the January 28 HealthDay article, which generated 105 articles in lay media outlets and a potential total audience exceeding 254 million.
The article was picked up by lay media outlets including US News & World Report, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Business Week, Forbes, MSN, Yahoo!News, Google Health, and more than 75 Internet television stations across the country. |

- Co-Sponsorship/Endorsed Activities
Due to the number of AANS members out of compliance with CME, a return to the former CME policy went into effect January 1, 2009 in which all accredited CME will be accepted towards the Award in Neurosurgery. The recommendation is for 60 percent of the CME to be neurosurgical and 40 percent to be general medical. Letters went out to all co-sponsors alerting them that as of January 1, 2009, the co-sponsorship program was no longer operational.

- Journal of Neurosurgery Online Articles and Neurosurgical Focus Call for Papers
The Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group now publishes their journals ahead of print. JNS, JNS: Spine and JNS: Pediatrics are publishing all accepted articles ahead of print. Articles are published online within two months of acceptance, and starting in January, will go online within four weeks of acceptance. These articles can be found on the home page at http://thejns.org/ via the Publish Before Print link.
Neurosurgical Focus, the online, indexed, open-access journal of the AANS, is announcing new topics for upcoming issues. Podcasts, the new FOCUS Readers' Forum, and further details about Neurosurgical Focus including the call for papers are available directly from the Journal of Neurosurgery.

YOUNG NEUROSURGEON AWARDS
The Scientific Program Committee of the XIV World Congress invites all young neurosurgeons to submit original, unpublished work related to basic science or clinical work in neurosurgery. Five Young Neurosurgeon Awards will be granted. The applicant should be applying within 10 years of having obtained his/her neurosurgical qualification. Students, interns and residents do not qualify for this award.
The award consists of an honorarium of $1,500.00 U.S. Dollars, a certificate and a complete waiver of registration fees and lodging expenses at the World Congress in Boston.
The awards will be presented to the five awardees at the Opening Ceremony of the XIV World Congress, and the winners will have an opportunity to present their work during the Young Neurosurgeon’s symposium during the meeting. The deadline for submission is February 28, 2009.

- 2009 AANS History Section Dinner

We are pleased to invite you to attend this year’s annual dinner of the Section on the History of Neurological Surgery of the AANS at the Museum of Man, located in Balboa Park. Some of the permanent exhibits that you will have access to include Footsteps Through Time, Four Million Years of Human Evolution, Discover Egypt, Ancient Egypt, Maya: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth, and Kumeyaay: Native Californians.
During our event at the museum, there will be a new exhibit called Skull Stories: Trephination and the Art of Medicine. The act and art of trephination have been practiced around the world for thousands of years. The upcoming exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Man will focus on the universality of this practice of skull surgery, the various methods and tools used to perform the surgery, and the reasons why the surgery is carried out. Peruvian skulls from the Museum of Man’s premiere collection (the Hrdlicka Paleopathology Collection) will be showcased, and people from various cultures around the world who perform trephinations will be highlighted.
