NEW ORLEANS (April 18, 2005) Robert L. Grubb Jr., MD, was named vice president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, April 16-21, 2005 for a one-year term. A member of the AANS since 1976, he serves on the Bylaws Committee, Executive Committee, and the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) Executive Council.
Dr. Grubb is professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiology (Radiation Sciences) at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. In 1993, he was named the Herbert Lourie Professor of Neurological Surgery. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina in 1961, followed by his medical degree in 1965. He served both his surgical internship and residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
He served with a United States Public Health Service surgical team, operating in a civilian hospital in Nha Trang, South Vietnam, from 1967 to 1968. He was a research associate at the National Institutes of Health, studying head injuries in primates, from 1968 to 1969.
A long-time member of the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery, Dr. Grubb served as chairman from 1994 to 1995. He was a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery from 1993 to 1999, and chairman from 1998 to 1999. Other affiliations include the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American Physiological Society, and the Society for Neuroscience.
Dr. Grubb is the recipient of many awards, most recently, the Distinguished Service Award of the Washington University School of Medicine, in 2005. In 2004, the AANS awarded him the Donaghy Award of the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section. He received the Grass Prize for Research from the Society of Neurological Surgeons in 1990.
