Massachusetts Neurosurgeon Named Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons

SAN FRANCISCO (April 24, 2006) - Arthur L. Day, MD, FACS, was named vice president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, April 24-27, 2006 for a one-year term. A member of the AANS since 1976, he served on the AANS Executive Committee as treasurer from 2001 to 2004. He is a member of the following committees: Bylaws, Executive, Finance, Long-Range Planning, and the new AANSPAC Board of Directors.

Dr. Day is professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. He is director of the Cerebrovascular Center and Neurologic Sports Injury Center, as well as associate chairman and program director of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass.

He graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School and completed his neurological surgery residency training at the University of Florida. After a fellowship focusing in brain tumor immunology at the University of Florida, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in 1978, where he stayed until 2002. His clinical interests are in cerebrovascular disease and sports medicine.

Dr. Day has served as president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the Alachua County Medical Society. He has held officer positions on the American Board of Neurological Surgery; serving as chair from 2003 to 2004, and treasurer from 2001 to 2003. He is past chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee, and the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section, and served as an AANS director-at-large from1996 to 1999.

A prolific author, Dr. Day has published more than 100 scientific articles and close to 50 book chapters. He co-edited Neurological Sports Medicine: A Guide for Physicians and Athletic Trainers, published by the AANS in 2001.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with more than 6,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
