James Ferrendelli, MD, Named 2007 AANS Honorary Member

WASHINGTON (April 16, 2007) - James Ferrendelli, MD, was named 2007 Honorary Member by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at the AANS Annual Meeting – Celebrating AANS’ Diamond Jubilee – April 16-19 in Washington, D.C. This recognition is open only to those individuals whose Honorary Membership adds distinction to the ranks of the organization. Candidates must be internationally renowned, and have made outstanding educational, research, or clinical contributions to the field of neurosurgery. Dr. Ferrendelli has played an integral role in advancing innovative research efforts as a member of the AANS Neurosurgical Research and Education Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee.

Since 1995, Dr. Ferrendelli has been professor of both neurology and pharmacology and the Kraft W. Eidman Professor in the Medical Sciences at The University of Texas Houston Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Ferrendelli was professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at this institution from 1995 to 2006. He was a member of the medical faculty at Washington University from 1970 to 1995, where he was the Seay Professor of Clinical Neuropharmacology and professor of neurology, pharmacology, neurological surgery and ophthalmology.

He received his medical degree in 1962 from the University of Colorado. After completion of a medical internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1963, he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1963 to 1965. Subsequently, he completed residencies in neurology and neuropathology at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropharmacology and neurochemistry at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He received board certification in 1973 from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Ferrendelli has authored or co-authored over 250 publications and articles and is a well known presenter, both nationally and internationally. He has served on various editorial boards, including: Epilepsia, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Annals of Neurology, Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, Neurology Alert, Metabolic Brain Disease, Journal of Epilepsy, Archives of Neurology, and others.

Dr. Ferrendelli is a member of several professional organizations involved in neurology, pharmacology and medical science, and has served in leadership positions of many. He has also served on several federal advisory committees including the Veterans Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration. He has received numerous awards and honors from universities and professional organizations for his accomplishments.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with more than 6,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to patients. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
