CHICAGO (April 28, 2008) - Martin B. Camins, MD, will be named vice president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in Chicago, April 28-May 1, 2008. A member of the AANS since 1980, he is a member of the following committees: Bylaws, Executive, Finance, Long-Range Planning, the NeurosurgeryPAC Board of Directors, and Professional Conduct.
Dr. Camins is currently clinical professor of Neurosurgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital and an attending neurosurgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital. He joined the medical staff at Mount Sinai in 1977 as an instructor in neurosurgery after having held a similar position at Cornell University Medical School for one year.
He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School/University of the Health Sciences in 1969, followed by an internship in general surgery at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center in 1970. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at The Neurological Institute of New York, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1975. During his residency, he was an International College of Surgeons Fellow at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queens Square, London, England. After his residency, he undertook a fellowship in electron microscopy at the Department of Neurosurgery, New York University-Bellevue Medical Center. Dr. Camins received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Chicago Medical School in 1994.
Dr. Camins served on the Executive Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons from 1985 to 1991 and was its vice president in 1988. He is past-president of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and of the New York City Society of Neurosurgeons. Dr. Camins also is a member of the Administrative Committee of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons and a member of the Neurosurgical Society of America and the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
He is currently the neurosurgical Regent of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) He served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of the ACS from 1992 to 1997 and as the Chairman of the its Advisory Council of Neurological Surgery from 1998 to 2001.
Dr Camins has edited two neurosurgery textbooks, is on the editorial board of the journal NEUROSURGERY and is an author of numerous articles on cranial and spinal surgery.
