Florida Neurosurgeon Named President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons

SAN DIEGO (May 4, 2009) — Troy M. Tippett, MD, FACS, will be named president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in San Diego, May 4-6, 2009. A member of the AANS since 1979, he has served on the AANS Board of Directors since 2004, most recently completing his term as president elect, one-year term as vice president, and three-year term as chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee. He is a member of the following committees: Bylaws, Executive, Finance, Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation Executive Council, NeurosurgeryPAC Board of Directors, and Strategic Planning. He served as chair of the old PAC, AANSPAC. Dr. Tippett received the Distinguished Service Award from the AANS in 2003 and from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) in 2008.

Dr. Tippett has been in private practice and a member of the Neurosurgical Group in Pensacola, Fla. since 1976, and medical director of this practice since 1988. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and received his medical degree in 1969 from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, Tenn. He completed his internship at City of Memphis Hospitals and neurosurgery residency at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis.

He served as president of the Florida Medical Association from 2005 to 2006. He also served as president of the Neurosurgical Society of America, the Florida Neurosurgical Society and the Escambia County Medical Society. He recently completed service as chair of the Florida delegation to the American Medical Association. He is a member of many professional organizations including the CNS, the Southern Neurosurgical Society and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Tippett has authored papers and articles for scientific journals on topics including carotid endarterectomy, disc herniation, and cervical spine procedures.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with more than 7,400 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
