SAN DIEGO (April 28, 2003) -- Arthur L. Day, MD, was named Treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) for a second year (of his three-year term), at the AANS Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, April 26-May 1, 2003. Dr. Day is currently Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and Associate Chairman and Residency Program Director of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Massachusetts.
He graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School in 1972 and completed his neurological surgery residency training at the University of Florida in 1977. After a fellowship focusing in brain tumor immunology at University of Florida, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in 1978, where he stayed until 2002. He recently moved to Boston to become director of the Cerebrovascular Center at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, in addition to his other academic and clinical duties. His clinical interests are in cerebrovascular disease and sports medicine. His research activities focus on cerebral ischemia and neural protection.
A frequent lecturer for the medical students and residents within the University of Florida, United States and abroad, Dr. Day has also published numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has recently co-edited the book Neurological Sports Medicine. As a visiting professor, he has taught in more than 30 universities and health institutions, both nationally and internationally. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, Neurosurgery, and Operative Techniques in Neurosurgery, and has been cited in Best Doctors of America.
Dr. Day has served as president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery of the AANS/CNS, the Sports Medicine Section of the AANS, and the Alachua County Medical Society. He is also past Chairman of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee, and is currently a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.

All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
