Findings Confirm Patient Access to Care In Jeopardy
WHAT: Neurosurgeons highlight the impact that the medical liability crisis is having on patient access to neurosurgical services at a joint press conference of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American Medical Association (AMA) and Pennsylvania Medical Society (PMS) during the Congress of Neurological Surgeons' Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
The AANS and CNS will reveal results of a new study confirming that the professional liability system is in a state of crisis for neurosurgeons and their patients nationwide. The survey results further demonstrate:
- Why patients can't get complex neurosurgical procedures.
- Why patients can't get emergency medical treatment.
- Why patients can't find a neurosurgeon close to home.
The AMA will discuss the need for practical medical liability reforms proposed in the HEALTH Act of 2002 (HR 4600 and S 2793). This federal legislation is based on the successful California law known as MICRA (Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act), which has stabilized the medical liability insurance market in California for the last 27 years.
The PMS will release new data from a statewide survey of neurosurgeons, indicating that neurosurgeons can't get insurance and are moving their practices out of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
