Florida Neurosurgeon Elected Treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons

TORONTO (April 23, 2001) -- Arthur L. Day, MD, was elected Treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 21-21, 2001.

Dr. Day, MD, is currently Professor, Co-Chairman, and Residency Program Director of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Florida.

He graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School in 1972 and completed his neurological surgery residency training at the University of Florida in 1977. After a fellowship focusing in brain tumor immunology at University of Florida, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in 1978. In August 1988, Dr. Day was promoted to Professor, and in 1990, he was appointed the James and Newton Eblen Eminent Scholar in Cerebrovascular Surgery.

Dr. Day is an attending staff physician at Shands Hospital and a consulting physician for both the Gainesville Veteran Administration Hospital and the University of Florida Athletic Department. His clinical interests are in cerebrovascular disease and sports medicine. His research activities focus on cerebral ischemia and neural protection.

A frequent lecturer for the medical students and residents within the University of Florida, United States and abroad, Dr. Day has also published numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has recently co-edited the book "Neurological Sports Medicine." As a visiting professor, he has taught in more than 25 universities and health institutions, both nationally and internationally. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, Neurosurgery, and Operative Techniques in Neurosurgery, and has been cited in Best Doctors of America.

Dr. Day has served as president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery of the AANS/CNS, the Sports Medicine Section of the AANS, and the Alachua County Medical Society. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and past Chairman of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons is a scientific and educational association with nearly 5,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are Board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spinal column, spinal cord, brain, nervous system and peripheral nerves.
