TORONTO (April 23, 2001) -- Volker Sonntag, MD, was elected the 2001-2002 Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 21-26, 2001. Dr. Sonntag is in practice at the Barrow Neurological Institute St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center since 1979.
He graduated Summa Cum Laude in Chemistry from Arizona State University and received his medical degree from the University of Arizona Medical School in 1971. Dr. Sonntag also served his internship from the University of Arizona Medical Center and his residency at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston Massachusetts from 1972-1977.
Dr. Sonntag is active in clinical and laboratory research. He holds over 20 professional memberships that includes: Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Director, Society of Neurlogical Surgeons, American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Neurosurgical Society of America, President North American Spine Society.
Dr. Sonntag is the author of the following monographs Surgical Treatment of Discogenic Disease of the Spine, Extradural Thoracic Spine Lesions, and is the editor of three books, Principles of Spinal Surgery, Essentials of the Spine, and Surgery of the Craniovertebral Junction.
Dr. Sonntag has authored over 60 book chapters and over 200 papers in peer-reviews journals. Dr. Sonntag has given over 400 presentations in institutions, Congress's and Universities around the United States and in over 30 countries abroad. He is on more than 10 editorial boards including the Journal of Neurosurgery.
Many of the honors Dr. Sonntag has received include the Barrow Neurological Teacher of the Year (six times), The Wakeman-Award-Duke University, Visiting Professor multiple institutes (U.S. and abroad) and he holds the Barrow Alumni Spine Chair.
Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons is a scientific and educational association with nearly 5,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are Board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spinal column, spinal cord, brain, nervous system and peripheral nerves.
