Press Release:  2001 Apr 23

Tom Brokaw To Serve As 2001 AANS Cushing Orator

Contact:  Heather Monroe  (847-378-0500)

Mr. Brokaw will speak about "An Anchor's View of the World."

A working reporter for over 35 years, Tom Brokaw is now the sole anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News. Throughout his career, Brokaw has anchored news reports from virtually every hot spot during the last two decades: Lebanon during the war; Philippines during the fall of Marcos; Operation Desert Storm; and the release of Nelson Mandella in South Africa. He was the only correspondent reporting live from Berlin the night the Wall fell, and was the first anchor into Tianamen Square following the communist crackdown. Early in his career, as part of his California assignment with NBC, Brokaw covered the political and social upheaval in America in the sixties and seventies. He reported the assassination of Robert Kennedy, the tumultuous '68 Democratic Convention, the campaign and election of Richard Nixon, through the height of Watergate and Nixon¡¦s resignation.

Brokaw has won every prestigious award in the field of broadcast journalism, published several essays and commentaries in prestigious newspapers and magazines, and recently authored the best-selling book, The Greatest Generation. He has also anchored a number of award winning documentaries including Journey to the Heart of China; The Making of an American; Why Can't We Live Together; Wall Street; Money Greed and Power; Kids, Guns and Violence; and Black Athletes: Fact and Fiction.

The AANS is honored to welcome Tom Brokaw to this year's Annual Meeting. His participation will continue the ongoing tradition of excellence advanced by previous AANS Cushing Orators. Funded in part by an educational grant provided by Medtronic Spinal & Neurological Technologies (Sofamor Danek, Surgical Navigation, Neurological, Midas Rex, and PS Medical)

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons is a scientific and educational association with nearly 5,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are Board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spinal column, spinal cord, brain, nervous system and peripheral nerves.
