Nurse and Physician Assistant Program

2006 Nursing Scholarship
Registered nurses in the U.S. actively involved in the care of neurosurgical patients (e.g., ICU, OR, PACU, Acute or Subacute or special neuro units) are eligible to apply for the Neurosurgical Nursing Scholarship

Neuroscience Nurse and Physician Assistant Activities

The Scientific Program Committee has organized a comprehensive selection of scientific topics that will be presented. All registered nurses and physician assistants are invited and encouraged to attend any of the Breakfast Seminars that are offered each morning, Monday through Thursday; and the Practical Clinic on Sunday.

The AANS is particularly dedicated to providing neurosurgical training courses to physician extenders, and is introducing the first program at this year’s annual meeting:

Evaluation and Initial Treatment of Patients with Low Back Pain:
A Course for Physician Extenders

This course is directed at physician extenders who are involved in evaluating patients with low back pain in an office or hospital setting. The three hour course will address relevant spinal anatomy and biomechanics and the clinical evaluation of patients presenting in the office or emergency room with low back pain. Emphasis will be placed on history, physical examination and imaging techniques that will allow an effective differential diagnosis to be derived, a final diagnosis to be made and appropriate initial therapy started. The faculty will include both practicing neurosurgeons and physician extenders.

Learning Objectives: After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the relevant normal and pathological anatomy and physiology of the thoraco-lumbar spine

  • Identify the anatomic basis of the back pain generator.

  • Recognize how to evaluate the history, physical exam and imaging data of the back pain patient

  • Discuss back pain treatment options to include medical management, physical therapy and surgical options

  • Discuss the preoperative and postoperative management of back pain surgeries to include complication recognition and avoidance
Faculty
James M. Ecklund, MD
Daniel Resnick, MD

To be held at the San Francisco Marriott.

Meeting Credit

Nursing Contact Hours will be awarded for attendance at the specified breakfast seminars and the practical clinic designed for nurses. This continuing education nursing activity was approved by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Physicians assistants will receive a certificate of credit for attendance at the general scientific program, and for any optional events attended.

Associate Members (Nurse and Physician Assistant Members) receive the discounted member price on all Annual Meeting functions.

AANS Associate and Allied Memberships
Benefits
Associate and Allied members save money on registration fees not only for the AANS Annual Meeting, but for all programming throughout the year. The AANS is making a concerted effort to involve nurses, physician assistants (PA) and surgical technicians in strategic planning to assure that any unique needs are being met. AANS provides leading educational opportunities—both clinically and in practice management. Associate and Allied members have access to the same programming as neurosurgeon members, and many of the same benefits, including:
  • Discounted prices on neurosurgical and practice management publications

  • Coding, reimbursement and other practice management seminars and resources

  • Networking and peer assistance through meetings and online services such as the Online Membership Directory

  • Access to the exhibit hall, featuring over 200 technical exhibits

  • Additional training programs and exclusive courses are in planning stages.
Associate Member Requirements

Nurses Certification is no longer required for nurse members. In 2004, AANS rules changed allowing all nurses who specialize in the care of neurosurgical patients to become members.

Physician Assistants
Physician Assistants (PA) may apply for Associate Membership in the AANS if certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (PA-C) and have shown distinction in neurosurgical disciplines.

Allied Member Requirements

Surgical Technicians—New Membership Category!
Allied Members shall be individuals who are Certified Surgical Technologists and are certified by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist.
