NEUROSURGERY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION (NREF)— NEUROSURGERY THROUGH RESEARCH
In 1981, in response to the alarming decline in federal and private funding for medical research the AANS founded its research division, the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF). Through voluntary donations over the past 26 years, the NREF has dedicated itself to providing private, non-governmental sources of funding for research training in the neurosciences, related to the field of neurological surgery.

The Foundation established two grant programs to fulfill this need. The Research Fellowship provides research training for neurosurgeons who are preparing to dedicate their futures to the research and application of new scientific knowledge. The Research Fellowship is a two-year grant for $70,000 or a one-year grant of $40,000. The one-year Young Clinician Investigator Award (YCI) is a $40,000 grant and provides young faculty members funding for pilot studies, which enables them to develop preliminary data to support applications for more permanent funding.

For more information about the NREF and the grant programs it supports, visit www.AANS.org or contact a member of the Development department at (847) 378-0500.
