It’s hard enough practicing the technical aspects of neurosurgery. Not all patients will be delighted with their outcomes. Unhappy patients may find their way to attorneys who will make you unhappy. Practice risks include more than just medical malpractice. They include complaints to the Board of Medicine, Attorney General and Office of Civil Rights Health and Human Services. Less often complaints are filed with the Food and Drug Administration, Federal Trade Commission, and so on. And, of course, patients with a mouse and Internet connection can vent their spleen online. Navigating this landscape can be challenging. The common theme is escalating conflict between a patient and his doctor. The session will present vignettes “ripped from the headlines.” The panel will address how conflicts started, what could have been done to prevent the escalations, and outcomes based on choices made. The session will tackle substantive tips on how to stay out of the crosshairs.
