First International Brain Mapping Course

On April 28-29, 2016, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) in collaboration with Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) held the First International Brain Mapping Course.

An international faculty from major brain mapping centers in Europe, North American and Asia, presented advances, advantages and practical issues in contemporary pre-operative and intra-operative brain mapping applications in brain tumor and functional neurosurgery.

The Rhoton Collection®

All AANS Members now have free access to an online repository of Dr. Albert Rhoton, Jr.'s legendary teaching materials illustrating neuroanatomy. The Rhoton Collection® website is an interactive site providing Dr. Rhoton's favorite lecture slides, video lectures and an interactive atlas — all in 2D and 3D formats. It is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Rhoton, funding from the AANS and Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF), and years of work by hundreds of volunteers.

Operative Grand Rounds

Members have access to this exciting series of archived neurosurgical videos which provide an informative, educational forum of operative procedures, with an emphasis on improving surgical safety, minimizing surgical complications and improving patient outcomes. NREF

To provide an enduring educational resource for neurosurgical residents and fellows, the AANS and the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) present a series of online courses. Each course constitutes a playlist of several lectures focused on a topic area. Available courses include Spinal Deformity for Residents, Skull Base Techniques for Senior Residents, and Science of Neurosurgical Practice. Neurosurgical Focus CME Icon

Free to the public online since 1996, Neurosurgical Focus covers a different topic in depth each month.  Enhanced by color images and video clips, each peer-reviewed issue constitutes a state-of-the-art "textbook chapter" in the field of neurosurgery. AANS members are eligible to earn up to 36 CME credits annually through Neurosurgical Focus. Examples of the myriad topics addressed to date include treatment of spasticity, the neurosurgeon in sports medicine, neuroendoscopy and the history of brain tumor surgery.

AANS Course Proposals

The AANS encourages the submission of new ideas for courses and educational resources. These submissions help the AANS Education and Practice Management Committee develop courses that meet the needs of those involved in the field of neurosurgery.

Allowing a lead time of at least six months helps provide adequate time for planning and coordination. If you require additional information, please contact the AANS Department of Education and Meetings at epm@aans.org.
