Young Neurosurgeon Categories

Candidate (Residents) Resident membership is free! This membership category is for trainees who are enrolled in an ACGME accredited North American neurological surgery residency training program. Canadian and Mexican neurosurgical residents — please contact the Member Services Department at 888.566.2267 or at MemberServices@aans.org to verify that you are in our database as a Resident.

Candidate (Fellow) Neurosurgical Fellow membership is free! This membership category is for neurosurgeons who are enrolled in a North American neurological surgery fellowship training program immediately following the completion of their neurosurgical residency training. Please contact the Member Services Department at 888.566.2267 or at MemberServices@aans.org to verify that you are in our database as a Fellow.

Provisional — For the neurological surgeon who has completed a training program approved by the ACGME, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery within the last five years, and has not yet met the certification requirements of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery.

International Candidate — A category for residents or fellows who are enrolled in a verifiable, non-North American neurosurgical training program. Upon application, the individual must submit a verifiable program completion date. Without a verifiable completion date, eligibility for this membership category is limited to five years maximum. Once certification is obtained, the International Resident/ Fellow Member may request transfer to International Member status with the submission of a copy of their certification certificate.

Medical Student — Medical students in accredited allopathic medical schools in the United States, Canada and Mexico are eligible to apply for AANS Medical Student membership. An official representative from the Office of Student Affairs must submit a letter verifying the student's current status and expected graduation date. Membership will expire upon graduation from medical school if the student does not match to a neurosurgical residency.
