News/Announcements
- "Shaping Neurosurgery's Future: A Global Perspective" was celebrated
as theme of the recent AANS Annual Meeting in
San Diego. "The broader medical community today is worldwide," writes
Dr. Bean in AANS
Neurosurgeon. "Neurosurgery is a global enterprise, without
technological or geographic borders. In this respect, it shares the
far-ranging connectivity that drives business, markets, communication
networks, scientific innovation, educational dissemination, and international
diplomatic policies across the planet."

- The AANS introduced a 1/2 day International Symposium featuring faculty from outside the United States as well as four Practical Clinics with an international focus. Faculty made presentations about procedures being used outside the U.S., particularly those that may soon be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- The International Reception was held at the Mingei International
Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. Hundreds of neurosurgeons from
around the world enjoyed meeting each other and taking part in

AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award: The AANS has selected Albino, P. Bricolo, MD from Verona, Italy as the 2009 recipient of the AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award in honor of his invaluable contributions to neurosurgery internationally.
The AANS plans to offer a similar award at each AANS Annual Meeting. If you know of a person who has been an influential figure in neurosurgery outside the United States and Canada, the AANS would like to know about him or her. We are looking particularly for those whose lifetime of contributions has made significant contributions to neurosurgery in the person’s home country. Send any nominations to info@aans.org.

Humanitarian Award: Professor Armando Basso,
MD of Buenos Aires, Argentina was selected to receive the AANS Humanitarian Award. This award is given to an individual who has given selflessly of time or talents to a charitable or public activity that benefits humanity and enhances the image of the specialty of neurological surgery.

Best International Abstract: Jizong Zhao, MD,
Prof., Department of Neurosurgery, Beijing Tian Tan Hospital,
Beijing, China for his abstract titled Surgical Treatment
for Hypertensive Intracerebral Hemorrhage in 2464 Patients--A
Multicenter Single-Blind Controlled Trial in China Mainland.
Dr. Zhao will present his abstract during Plenary Session
I on Monday May, 4. There he will receive his framed scroll
and a $500 award.
- International Travel Scholarship: The scholarship provides $1500 to support the attendance of a neurosurgeon from a developing country to the AANS Annual Meeting. The 2009 recipient is Sang
Hyung Lee, MD, PhD for his abstract titled Apoptosis
of Hippocampal Neurons on Synergistic Effect of Amyloid B-Peptide
1-42 and Ethanol. Dr. Lee will receive the award at the AANS International Reception, held 7:30 PM Monday, May 4 at the Mingei International Museum. He is from Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Fellowship Announcements:
The AANS International Visiting Surgeons Fellowship is an effort by the AANS
to assist our colleagues in developing countries with an educational experience
at a North American Neurosurgical Training Program — typically
three months in duration. The AANS is accepting applications for the 2010
AANS International Visiting Surgeon Fellowship.

Haitham Handhal Shareef |
Haitham Handhel Shareef MBChB IBMS from Baghdad, Iraq. Dr. Shareef has planned an observational experience that includes studying recent advances in spinal instrumentation; cerebrovascular surgery especially that of aneurysm clipping; as well as general neuroendovascular skull base surgery techniques. He will be working with Alan S. Boulos MD at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY.
Shahzad Shamim MD, from Karachi Pakistan. Dr. Shamim plans to concentrate on the areas of neuro-intensive care and brain tumor research. Further goals include closely observe the workings of an established neurosurgery service and training program in US to help him share ideas, practices and improve neurosurgery service in Pakistan.
JNS Publishing Group (Journal of Neurosurgery) Announcements:
- The AANS funded the conversion of articles published by the Journal
of Neurosurgery (JNS) since its inception in 1944 into articles that can be posted online. Articles are posted on the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG) Web site at http://thejns.org/loi/jns.
All journal subscribers have access to all of this content. Those without a journal subscription can access articles older than 12 months through 10 years. These are open access. Anything older than 10 years can be purchased as a single article, through "pay per view."
- AANS' publishing arm, the JNS Publishing Group participates in The Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI), which provides free or very low cost online access to the major journals in biomedical and related social sciences to local, not-for-profit institutions in developing countries. Online access to all three Journal of Neurosurgery print journals is provided to library users in all Band I countries participating in the World Health Organization HINARI program.
