Congress Passes Trauma Care Legislation - Please Thank Your Senators and Representatives and Urge them to Support Full Funding

During the last week of March, the House (by voice vote) and Senate (by unanimous consent) passed the Trauma Care Systems Planning & Development Act (H.R. 727). The legislation is now headed to President Bush for his signature. The bill reestablishes the Health Resources and Services Administration's Trauma-Emergency Medical Services program and authorizes funding through fiscal year 2012. The bill also creates a new competitive grant program for states that have already begun the process of establishing trauma systems and protocols using national standards. Funding for the bill is authorized at $12 million for 2008, $10 million for FY 2009 and $8 million for 2010-2012. Congress must now pass legislation funding this program for FY 2008.

Please contact your Senators and Representatives and thank them for passing this important legislation and urge them to support funding of $12 million in the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Bill. You may send your letter via the AANS/CNS Legislative Action Center at: http://capwiz.com/noc/issues/alert/?alertid=9598381. A sample letter has been created for you, which you can edit and tailor to fit your own local situation. You are highly encouraged to add personal information, which makes your message much stronger. If you have any questions, please contact Katie Orrico, Director of the AANS/CNS Washington Office at korrico@neurosurgery.org or 202/628-2072.
