This summer I will be using 3-D modeling software to map the geometry, wall thickness, and elastic characteristics of cerebral aneurysms in both real and idealized patients. Incorporating relevant patient data, we will determine the tensile stress on various portions of the aneurysm wall under a given set of vascular determinants. We will attempt to find correlations between the traditional risk factors of aneurysm rupture and the observed distribution of stress patterns on the computer models. We also hope to determine if there is a difference in the stress distribution with regard to geometry in ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. Together with relevant clinical criteria, this information will prove useful in assessing the danger an aneurysm of particular shape and thickness poses for a patient.
