The cancer stem cell hypothesis has recently seen a surge of supporting evidence that implicates transformed stem cells as the source of the clonally expanding tumor in several human cancers including brain cancer. This model suggests that remnants of these culprits may fuel cancers with the notorious ability to survive treatment and recur. Understanding the mediators and mechanisms that regulate such a process may provide a breakthrough in our treatment strategy. The unequivocal proof of the existence of stem cells and glial progenitor cells in the brain make it compelling to study and elucidate these mechanisms in neoplasms of the central nervous system. The long term goal of this fellowship proposal is to study the role cancer stem cells play in brain carcinogenesis, and more specifically characterize their profile and mechanisms of transformation and migration.
