The effects of modulating GABA receptor activity on neuronal cellular function and behavioral outcomes following controlled cortical impact in rats

Our laboratory is interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved in traumatic brain injury. We are currently using a rodent CCI model to understanding the effects of GABA receptor modulation following brain injury. Recently, we have identified flumazenil, an FDA-approved benzodiazepine antagonist, as a potential therapeutic agent that may help attenuate the cognitive deficits following traumatic brain injury. With the use of behavioral and gene expression analysis, we plan to further elucidate the functional and genetic mechanisms involved in GABA modulation with flumazenil treatment following TBI in rats.
