(Reaffirmed, November 2009)
Neurosurgery has a commitment not only to the present but to the future; only by strengthening the quality and capability of its practitioners can it hope to provide excellence in patient care. It is therefore important that neurosurgical residents actively participate in surgical procedures on patients.
Such participation in surgery should have the guidance and support of the attending surgeon of record, however, and patients should recognize that residents may be involved in their surgery. The ultimate responsibility for surgical procedures must rest with the surgeon of record.
