3-D Session - Operative Nuances I: Microvascular Decompression Surgery and Intraoperative Challenges

Director(s): Aaron A. Cohen-Gadol, MD, FAANS

Faculty: Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS; William T. Couldwell, MD, PhD, FAANS

This 90-minute session will review important technical nuances for improving patient outcomes during microvascular decompression surgery. Detailed surgical videos of different procedures (for trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and geniculate neuralgia) will be reviewed using 3-D high definition videos to maximize the learning experience for the viewers. Importantly, innovative 3-D computerized graphic models will be presented to augment the learning experience.

Learning Objectives: After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  • Review the indications for surgical treatment of cranial nerve compression syndromes.
  • Illustrate the general techniques for microvascular decompression procedures.
  • Identify the operative nuances to advance patient safety during challenging intraoperative moments.
