NREF Applications now open for New Joint Cerebrovascular Section Traveling Fellowship & other news

NREF: You are the Essential Ingredient in the Recipe to NREF Success!

Neurosurgery has a fairly simple recipe: train the very best medical students and focus on funding research that will help improve patient outcomes. NREF supports these two ingredients in a fairly big way, having invested over $18 million dollars in education and research since 1980. For every $500 donated to the NREF between now and December 31, 2017, you will receive one entry to win dinner for six at August, an award-winning restaurant, in the exclusive Chef’s Tasting Room on Saturday, April 28, 2018, during the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans. Make your contribution online at

Grant & Fellowship Applications Available through the NREF Online Grant Portal:

  • The NREF is pleased to announce a new fellowship: The Joint Cerebrovascular Section Traveling Fellowship for a practicing, CAST-certified neurointerventionalist (of any specialty) to visit a high-volume cerebrovascular center in a one week observership. Click here for details.
  • November 1, 2017, is the final deadline for NREF Research Grants and Young Clinician Investigator Award applications. Apply online through the NREF portal.
  • The application for the 2018 Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship (MSSRF) opens on November 1, 2017.

Save the Date for the 15th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament

The annual tourney, hosted by Columbia University, is planned for Saturday, June 9, 2018, in New York City. Proceeds benefit the Andrew T. Parsa HYM Fund to support brain tumor research. For more information, contact Ricardo J. Komotar, MD, FAANS, at or Jeffrey N. Bruce, MD, FAANS, at

Contributions to NREF support education and research as well as the opportunity for us to collaborate and advance the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and improve patient care in neurosurgery.
