Contact Congress to Help Harness Abusive Prior Authorization Tactics

Prior authorization has become the bane of most neurosurgical practices, causing unnecessary delays and denials of care. The AANS and CNS have joined forces with a coalition of medical specialties to try to bring some sanity to this insane process. To that end, Reps. Phil Roe, MD (R-Tenn.), and Ami Bera, MD (D-Calif.), have drafted a letter to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma, asking CMS to review the use of prior authorization under Medicare Advantage. The purpose of the effort is β€œto help increase transparency, streamline prior authorizations and minimize the impact on patients.” Click here for a copy of that letter.

Contact your Representative and ask him/her to sign the Roe-Bera prior authorization letter to CMS. Click here for a draft email message that you can send to your member of Congress. It would be helpful for you to edit this message to add your own example of how prior authorization has delayed or denied medically necessary neurosurgical care. It will make the message more powerful and personal.
