AANS and CNS Send Letter of Support to Representatives Tiberi and Neal for Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month (H. Res 522)

  • Emergency/Trauma Care and Stroke

Dear Representatives Tiberi and Neal:

On behalf of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological
Surgeons (CNS), and AANS/CNS Joint Cerebrovascular Section, we would like to thank you for introducing
H. Res 522, which expresses support for designating September 2014 as “National Brain Aneurysm
Awareness Month.” Neurosurgeons are the providers primarily responsible for the comprehensive
treatment of brain aneurysms, and as such, we enthusiastically offer our support for this initiative.

As you are aware, nearly 6 million Americans have a brain aneurysm, and each year, approximately
30,000 experience a ruptured brain aneurysm. Sadly, 40 percent of patients suffering from a ruptured
aneurysm die. This number could be decreased significantly with timely and appropriate treatment. Your
resolution would bring crucial understanding to this issue and help to raise awareness of brain
aneurysms, methods of early detection, and treatment options.

The AANS and CNS greatly appreciate your leadership and commitment to this pivotal issue. Please let
us know if there is anything else we can do to achieve swift passage of this important resolution.
