AANS and CNS Statement on the Confirmation of Rep. Tom Price to Lead HHS
Neurosurgeons Commend Senate for Approving Dr. Price’s Nomination as Nation’s Top Health Official

Washington, DC—The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of
Neurological Surgeons (CNS) commend the United States Senate for confirming Rep. Tom Price, MD
(R-Ga.) to serve as the new Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“Throughout his time in Congress, Dr. Price, an orthopaedic surgeon, has been a staunch advocate for the
preservation of the doctor-patient relationship, a fierce protector of private practice and a stalwart
supporter of academic medicine,” remarked AANS president, Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS, a
pediatric neurosurgeon from Memphis, Tenn. “As a practicing physician, he understands all aspects of the
health care system, which is essential to run HHS effectively,” Dr. Boop added.

CNS president, Alan M. Scarrow, MD, JD, FAANS, a practicing neurosurgeon from Springfield, Mo.,
noted, “On behalf of organized neurosurgery we congratulate Dr. Price on his confirmation, and we look
forward to working with him to create a health care delivery system that promotes high-quality, highvalue, and better-coordinated care for our patients.”
