Bhuvic Patel, MD, Selected as 2022-23 Van Wagenen Fellow

The William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship Selection Committee has announced Bhuvic Patel, MD, as the recipient of the 2022-23 William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship. Dr. Patel, a resident in neurosurgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, will commence his Van Wagenen fellowship in July 2022.

Dr. Patel will spend his fellowship year at the Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany, under the supervision and mentorship of Felix Sahm, MD, PhD, director of the division of molecular neuropathology. He will pursue the research topic of “Region-specific epigenetic analysis of meningiomas and their cell of origin.”

“I am honored and excited to have been awarded the Van Wagenen Fellowship,” Dr. Patel said. “The fellowship will give me the opportunity to work with brilliant scientists overseas and help lay the foundation for my career as a neurosurgeon-scientist.”

The Van Wagenen Fellowship offers post-residency study in a foreign country for a period of 12 months. The William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship was established by the estate of Dr. Van Wagenen, who was one of the founders and the first President of the Harvey Cushing Society, now the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. The Van Wagenen Fellowship provides freedom in scientific development without the restrictive limitations usually imposed by many research grants and fellowships.
