RE: Support for H.R. 1876, the “Good Samaritan Health Professionals Act”
Dear Representatives:
As the Alliance of Specialty Medicine (Alliance), our mission is to advocate for sound federal
health care policy that fosters patient access to the highest quality specialty care. As patient and
physician advocates, the Alliance writes in support of H.R. 1876, the “Good Samaritan Health
Professionals Act”. This legislation is important to support health professionals serving as
volunteers in response to a national emergency, major disaster, or a public health emergency.
Many of the specialty physicians represented by the Alliance volunteer their time and skills to
respond in times of crisis and ensure quality medical care is available. Federal law should provide
these medical service volunteers who cross state lines to assist with the response to a national
emergency with adequate protection. The Alliance supports the “Good Samaritan Health
Professionals Act” which would extend federal liability protections to licensed, certified, or
authorized health care professionals who volunteer for the purposes of responding to a disaster.
