Fraud and Abuse
Neurosurgeons must comply with an ever-increasing complex morass of laws, rules and regulations aimed at preventing fraud and abuse. Key among these are Medicare's anti-kickback and Stark self-referral laws. Penalties for non-compliance with federal fraud and abuse laws are stiff and include both criminal and civil monetary fines. Neurosurgeons are encouraged to assess their practice and work with their own legal counsel to ensure compliance.
